Tertiary Treatment: The final step in cleaning wastewater. This step is important for removing the remaining inorganic and organic compounds from the water. After this step the water is either reclaimed, recycled, or discharged.

Vocabulary:

Contact Time: The length of time that the water is in contact with the disinfectant.

Dechlorination: Process of removing excess chlorine from the water before being put back into the environment.

Often with tertiary treatment, some sort of disinfection process is used. Some examples are ozone, UV Rays, and chlorination. There are other possibilities, but those are the most common.

This module will not go in-depth into tertiary treatment because it does not come up very often during industrial assessments.
