What does the EEC/IAC do?

The Oregon State University Energy Efficiency Center and Industrial Assessment Center (OSU EEC/IAC) offers small and medium-sized manufacturers, agricultural producers, municipal facilities, university facilities and others on-site assessments. Student teams led by engineering faculty visit Northwest sites to seek ways to increase profits by increasing productivity and reducing energy use and waste. Within 60 days, the EEC sends a report to the client with analysis and specific recommendations to improve efficiency. Since 1986, the OSU EEC/IAC has:

  • Performed over 590 assessments
  • Served over 550 manufacturers
  • Saved an average of $183,000 annually per industrial plant

Application requirements:

  • One Year+ Commitment (10-20 hours/week during school, two full time summers)
  • Engineering major preferred (Other majors possible)
  • Experience with MS Windows, Word, and Excel

The success of the EEC/IAC program depends on the quality of the student analysts. The EEC/IAC will help you to develop the skills that you have currently. In return, we expect a high level of commitment from each analyst to ensure the continued success of the center. The EEC/IAC is committed to assisting you in your professional development. Expectations of analysts:

  • Commit to delivering a high-quality report to our clients within 60 days.

This commitment starts prior to the site visit and continues until the report is in the mail. To be successful, we must be active in researching past reports in similar industries, be thorough in our data collection at the plant, be justifiable in our solutions, and be detailed in our analysis. Although you may only be assigned to a small part of each report, your responsibilities do not end until you have signed the final report.

  • Commit to professional development.

Successful, timely completion of reports requires us to be disciplined in professional development. Your classes will provide you with some of the skills and tools needed to analyze the problems that we see in the plants. However, your classes will not teach you everything. You will be responsible for taking advantage of the training opportunities presented, taking initiative to research new technologies and savings opportunities, and taking ownership of multiple areas of specialization. You are also responsible for identifying topics and areas in which tools and training improvements are needed and communicating professional accomplishments to the center's management.

  • Commit to the EEC/IAC Team.

The center cannot be successful without teamwork. This requires each member of the team to be more than just an analyst. Each member of the team must be able to rely on you to consistently meet deadlines, actively seek assistance with problems or offer assistance if needed, come into the office when scheduled, and maintain a high level of professional work ethic.

  • Commit to 1+ years of employment.

Work as a student employee for 12 months including at least 2 summer sessions preferably.


Typical Student Positions

  • Efficiency Analyst:

The student efficiency analyst works in a team performing productivity, energy, and waste minimization assessments for Northwest end resource users. This position includes visiting a wide variety of facilities, applying engineering and productivity principles to manufacturing, agricultural and other processes, and preparing reports of recommendations to improve efficiency.

  • Motor Systems Analyst:

The student motor systems analyst usually enters the position as an experienced efficiency analyst. This position entails leading collection and analysis of site motor application and operation and recommending higher efficiency alternatives to current equipment.

  • Compressors Analyst:

The student compressor analysts usually enters the position as an experienced efficiency analyst. This position entails leading collection and analysis of site air compressor installations and operation to identify opportunities improve compressed air system efficiency by to reducing leaks, modifying compressor control strategies, and evaluating pressure settings.

  • Lead Energy Accounting Analyst:

The student lead energy accounting analyst leads a team responsible for gathering, entering, and analyzing energy consumption, production and waste information in preparation for assessments and in support of preparing assessment reports. Strong leadership qualities, good interpersonal skills, and attention to details are required. Business, accounting, or engineering students are encouraged to apply.

  • Database Specialist:

The student database specialist creates and maintains an MS Access databases that support the center's management and operation. The database specialist will also support an effort to migrate to web based data entry and analysis. The ideal student will have Microsoft Access, Front Page, MYSQL and PHP experience. Interested b

  • Marketing Lead:

The student marketing lead is responsible for acquiring new clients, informing those clients of our work and scheduling audits. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access and Excel are desired.
