Overview

This module will go through the full process typically found in municipal wastewater facility, but in an industrial setting their water treatment may only feature parts of this process. Commonly found technologies in industry are screening, aeration, and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) tanks, but others can be used depending on the facility.

Preliminary Treatment (Red Circle)
  • Screening of larger solids as they enter the facility
Primary Treatment (Yellow Circle)
  • Grit removal to get the smaller solids
  • Followed by sedimentation tanks to settle out heavy organic matter
Secondary Treatment (Black Circle)
  • Trickling filters to consume the nutrients in the wastewater
  • Aeration basin to use microbes to form larger solids to settle out, also raises the dissolved oxygen levels
  • Clarifiers to let the solids settle out
Tertiary Treatment (Purple Circle)
  • Oxidation pond where sunlight and natural processes kill harmful bacteria and viruses
Solid Waste Handling (Blue Circle)
  • Digesters treat the sludge from the primary sedimentation tank and clarifiers to create biosolids and biogas
  • Biosolids are dried and sent out to be used for land remediation
  • Biogas is used to generate power

**This is just a basic outline--every wastewater facility will have its own layout.
