Screening: The first step in cleaning wastewater. Water that comes into the facility goes through the screens first to remove large debris such as rags and sticks.

This is an example of a mechanical bar screen. These are one option for self-cleaning screening.

A facility may choose to use coarse or fine screens or a combination of both depending on their needs.

Screens are important for removing larger debris so they cannot cause problems with other equipment in the facility.

There are multiple technologies available for screening and some examples are:

Bar and rod screens that may require manual cleaning but do not have mechanical costs.

Mechanical Bar Screens, also known as Step Screens.

Bar and rod screens can be manually or mechanically cleaned, while step screens remove the debris with movable plates. Step screens are a newer technology, but both technologies have their own pros and cons.
